Become a foster parent

If you are unable to make a long term commitment but still want to save a life, become a foster with us by filling in the application below!

We always need fosters! Providing a temporary home takes love, patience, and time—some animals need as little as one to two weeks, while others may need more. We ask for at least a one-month commitment, sometimes longer. It’s a big responsibility, but saving a life is priceless!

Foster FAQs

We’re located in Saint Lucia and care for 50-100 dogs (and some cats) at a time. Foster homes are essential—they help dogs adjust to home life while making space for more rescues.

Most dogs are adopted within 2-4 weeks. After a week of settling in, we gather updates from fosters to refine their adoption profile. Adoption speed depends on photos, behavior progress, and promotion. Once an application is received, the process moves quickly!

No! First-time fosters are welcome, and we provide support and guidance.

Most of our dogs are Potcakes, a Caribbean mixed breed. Common mixes include Shepherds, Hounds, Collies, Black Mouth Curs, Labs, and Chihuahuas.

  • Puppies: 10-25+ lbs
  • Adults: 20-50 lbs (Most are 30-40 lbs when full-grown)
  • Small dogs under 20 lbs are available occasionally.

A car is helpful but not required, except for fosters outside the Greater Toronto Area. If you don’t have one, please arrange transport for vet visits and airport pickups. We assist when possible.

Since our shelter is in the Caribbean, organizing supplies is challenging. We have some food, leashes, and collars available for pickup in Downtown Toronto. Many fosters use their own supplies or grab basics from the dollar store.

We cover vet care and essential supplies (if picked up from our volunteers). Fosters may need to restock minor items like poop bags or food if they run out.

We book and cover vet appointments at approved clinics. Visits to non-approved vets won’t be reimbursed. Contact us immediately for medical concerns, and we’ll arrange care.

Yes! Most of our dogs are puppies and do well with other dogs, but we assess each one individually. Resident pets should be fully vaccinated and on heartworm, flea, and tick prevention.

Yes, but since we have limited background info, we match families carefully. Puppies typically adjust well when introduced properly. Parents should consider their child’s energy, demeanor, and ability to respect boundaries.

No. Dog parks are unpredictable, and we can’t guarantee safety. Other dogs may not be vaccinated, and any incidents would be the foster’s responsibility.

If you’re traveling, let us know ASAP so we can arrange care. Pre-approved sitters (friends or family) are an option, but please notify us before leaving your foster dog with someone else.

Once an adopter is approved, we arrange a meeting. Fosters provide insight into the dog’s personality. You must notify us before scheduling meet-and-greets. Friends and family interested in adopting must apply through our process.

Hand-offs depend on location, comfort, and vetting requirements. Transfers can happen at the foster home or another agreed-upon spot, but approval is required before handing over a dog.

Contact us if challenges arise. We may ask you to keep fostering until we find a new placement since frequent moves can be stressful. Emergency support is available when needed.

Yes! If you’re interested, apply ASAP—ideally within the first week before promotion begins. If you don’t adopt, friends and family can apply too.

  • Attending vet appointments (or arranging transport)
  • Restocking minor supplies if needed
  • Participating in adoption events when possible
  • Providing updates, photos, and reviewing the dog’s adoption bio
  • Meeting potential adopters and sharing updates on social media
